Bob Last PS MSIAD

Education/Career

Studied at Sutton School of Art, gaining an NDD in Illustration and Lithography.

Then came the shock of the new – two years National Service! During that time I was able to attend Norwich Art School, where I did life drawing and pottery. I also painted many murals in the Officer’s mess, so have good memories of those two years.

Back home I went freelance, did some part time teaching and married a student I had been with at Art School! One of my working contacts asked me to join his London based exhibition Design Unit. I worked there for three years and it was during this period, in 1962, that I was awarded my Membership of the Society of Industrial Artists and Designers.

Returning to freelance design, for the next thirty-five years I had work displayed all over the world - with major companies such as Shell International, Royal Doulton, BP America, Racal Electronics, Gibbs, De Beers, British Plastics, Pearsons and many more. In truth I never had to look for work, it all came from recommendation.

I became a member of the Pastel Society in 2001, then a council member and was elected and stood as Vice President from 2008-2011.

Artist's Statement:

Alive with a dynamic expressive energy the landscapes of Jeannette Hayes resonate with a liberated optimistic creativity.
In works that are constructed out of lines and blocks of evocative colour, abstract activity is finely balanced with landscape reference. A love of the exquisiteness and drama of the natural world conveys itself in the drawn marks, gestures and accents of colour. Colour plays a central role - titles often contain a colour: ‘Spring Green’, ‘Orange Mousa’, or ‘Blue Snowing’ - setting an ambient mood to the recording of her experience of a place. This gives the works a poetic quality that is in keeping with the way they were conceived.
