Simon Hodges PS

Artist's Statement:

My primary inspiration comes from the landscape but with an architectural background, buildings and townscapes feature strongly in my work. I am self taught as an artist referring back to greats such as Turner, Seago and Melville to inspire a constant rethinking although in essence my approach to painting is no more complicated than working hard to capture a sense of place and time, quality of light, variations in weather, changes of season and to portray this in two dimensions considering composition, drawing, narrative, tone and colour.

Method of Working:

Whilst my work always begins in front of the subject by sketching in a variety of mediums, most of my finished work is done in my studio, often using compositional drawings or paintings before commencing the finished piece. Besides pastel, I work in charcoal, watercolour, acrylic and oil; at times I use a combination of these mediums.

Artist’s Statement

Painting for Averil is about developing his feelings and thoughts about a subject – drawing out the essence and building the intensity and at times allowing the painting to almost move on its own.

Societies:

Member – The Pastel Society.

Method of Working:

Averil always makes multiple sketches on site in fineliner pen, supplemented with pastel and colour notes. She will also rely on her memory and her ‘feel’ about a subject, so that the work becomes an instinctive and emotional response. The main body of work is in acrylic paint (using palette knife and a range of brushes from 4 inch wide to a rigger) and pastels, using Unison pastels for broad marks, conte sticks and pencils for fine marks and restructuring. A robust mountboard is the most usual base for her paintings but canvas and canson, ingres and arches paper have also played a part. Her subjects range from seascape to still life. Living in Devon offers wonderful estuary and coastal scenery with the addition of Dartmoor on her doorstep. She works on one painting at a time except when developing a ‘series’ on a particular theme.
